15:35 – Interior automotive coatings – changes in finishing technology

Traditionally, plastic components were bright chromium plated – a finish that highlights natural contours, gives a feeling of quality, is robust and easy to clean. Today engineers are specifying alternatives including satin chromium, as a non-glare finish, and dark chromium, which offers a ‘warmer’ aspect. And tomorrow? Coloured finishes that retain the attributes of plated metallic layers are now possible due to advances in UV curing technology.
Collectively these give three-dimensional choice for coatings that must not only look appealing, but endure day-to-day handling when applied to components such as door handles.
